What is the Intel Atom CPU?

The Intel Atom is the generic brand name for a popular processor manufactured by Intel that is used primarily in Netbooks and Small Notebooks. The Atom CPU is based on a line of x86 and x86-64 microprocessors.

The Atom processor comes in two series: Atom Z series, which is codenamed Silverthorne, and the Atom N series, which is codenamed Diamondville.

As per the latest sales figures, the Atom CPU is particularly popular in the Netbook market, with Z520, Z530 and N270 being the most popular models.
